Texas State Parks

Overview of the Trails

in Steven F. Austin State Park

The trail system at Stephen F Austin State Park is one of the three primary attributes of the park. It is composed of approximately 5 miles of shady well-maintained trails with only minor elevation changes. All trails are rated EASY.

Trails encompass all three major bio-regions of the park (river bottomlands, riparian river ecosystem, and upland (Post Oak Savana). The Pileated Woodpecker Trail includes self-guided interpretive signs for some of the native species. The short Nature Trail includes twenty plant species natives to the park. All trails are open to hiking and most are open to biking. Most trails safely accommodate strollers.

Almost every month on the first Saturday there is a Nature Walk that starts at 10 AM from the Amphitheater. On the first day of the year, the park hosts a special First Day Hike to get the year started off right. In addition, there are Bottomland Forest Hikes offered most months. All these events are listed on the park website and park bulletin boards.
