Box Elder Tree
Native Range Map

This tree is a Texas native, and is drought tolerant. It is found all over the park but prefers dryer areas in the southern half of the park. Deer especially love to browse these leaves.

It also is called Texas Elm, Basket Elm, Lime Elm, and Southern Rock Elm. Other elms are also found in the park such as Winged Elm and American Elm. The Cedar Elm can be distinguished by the smaller sized leaves.

Seeds are encased in paper case called samara and liked by deer, songbirds, and squirrel. This tree got its name because it often found near or with Cedar Trees.

The scientific name is Ulmus crassifolia.
