This native tree is the Official State Tree of Texas and is found primarily in the southern (dryer) areas of the park, especially in the Day Use area and near the Amphitheater. The nuts are enjoyed by squirrels, racoons and people. The nuts are low in cholesterol. Native Americans used the nut oil for seasoning and ground up nuts into a meal to thicken stews. Member of the Hickory family. Pecan trees can live over 200 years.
The scientific name is Carya illinoinenis
