This native tree is found only along the Brazos Riverbank, since these trees require lots of water. Willow trees have been used for over 3000 years in Egypt and China for pain relief since the leaves and bark contain a natural aspirin-like substance. The wood is soft and weak. Small branches are used for baskets, hampers, and wicker furniture. This tree is very fast growing (up to 4 feet per year), but short lived. Typical lifespan averages 55 years.
The scientific name is Salix nigra
